The Children's Hands-On Museum (CHOM) of Tuscaloosa is a dynamic learning environment designed to stimulate curiosity, creativity, and shared discovery in visitors of all ages. Located in downtown Tuscaloosa, next to City Hall, CHOM has been an established and vital part of the community since 1988, providing a highly-regarded educational institution and tourist destination. Inside, visitors are immersed in a world of color, sound, and tactile experiences. The museum features three floors of exhibits that cater to different age groups and interests, ensuring something for everyone from newborns to teenagers. Exhibits are designed to be touched, explored, and interacted with, encouraging children to learn through play and experimentation. Popular exhibits include the Choctaw Indian Village, a replica of a Choctaw settlement from the 1700s where children can learn about the history and culture of the Choctaw people. They can also try their hand at traditional crafts like pottery and shell necklace making. Another favorite is the Beavers' Bend exhibit, which focuses on the natural environment of Alabama, complete with a beaver lodge and live animals. Other exhibits include Once Upon a Farm, a soft play area designed for newborns through age 3, the Arts Studio, Lil' Sprouts Farmer's Market, and a towboat replica. CHOM also hosts a variety of educational programs and special events throughout the year, including workshops, summer camps, and holiday events.
