Berat Castle: A Living Fortress
Explore Berat Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where ancient history meets vibrant culture and breathtaking views of Albania's 'City of a Thousand Windows'.
Berat Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Beratit, is more than just a castle; it's a living, breathing community steeped in history. Rising 214 meters above sea level, the castle has been inhabited since the 4th century BC, initially fortified by the Illyrian Parthini tribe. Its strategic location along a main east-west route made it a coveted stronghold throughout the centuries. Conquered by the Romans in 200 BC, the castle was rebuilt and reinforced by the Byzantines in the 5th, 6th, and 13th centuries. Today, the castle reflects a blend of these influences, with well-preserved Byzantine churches and Ottoman-era mosques coexisting within its walls. Notably, the Red Mosque's minaret still stands tall, a testament to the area's religious diversity. What sets Berat Castle apart is that it remains inhabited. Wander through its narrow, cobblestone alleys, and you'll encounter locals going about their daily lives in traditional Ottoman-era houses. Explore the castle grounds to discover the Church of the Holy Trinity, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture, and the Onufri Museum, which houses a collection of 16th-century Albanian icons. The castle also offers panoramic views of Berat, the "City of a Thousand Windows," with its distinctive white Ottoman houses cascading down the hillside.
