Halveti Tekke: A Spiritual Oasis in Berat

Nestled in the heart of Berat, the Halveti Tekke stands as a testament to Albania's rich spiritual and cultural history. Built in 1782 by Ahmet Kurt Pasha, this tekke (lodge) was dedicated to the Khalwati order, a Sufi sect known for its mystical practices. The tekke is composed of a prayer hall, a small room for religious services, and a portico at the entrance. Inside, visitors are greeted by elaborate decorations, including a carved wooden gallery and a mihrab adorned with stone stalactites. The walls are covered with frescoes depicting dwelling houses, religious buildings, and landscapes, while the wooden ceiling is decorated in the Baroque style with 14-carat gold plates. The tekke's acoustics are enhanced by unique holes in the walls beneath the frescoes. The portico features five stone columns taken from the ancient city of Apollonia, adding another layer of historical significance. The tekke is part of an Islamic Center complex that includes the King Mosque, creating a harmonious blend of religious architecture. The Halveti Tekke provides a tranquil escape and a chance to appreciate the intricate artistry and spiritual ambiance of this historical site.
