Discover more about Byllis Archaeological Park

Byllis Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the well-preserved remnants of an ancient city that thrived for centuries. Located in Albania, this expansive archaeological site spans 30 hectares on a hill 524 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Vjosa River valley. Founded between 370 and 350 BC, Byllis was once the largest city in Southern Illyria and an important center during Roman and Byzantine rule. According to legend, the city's origins trace back to Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles. The city was the capital of the Bylline community. The impressive city walls, stretching 2,200 meters, enclose an area of 30 hectares, a testament to the city's significance. Within these walls lie the ruins of a once-thriving urban center, including a theater that could seat approximately 7,500 spectators, temples, residential quarters, and public structures. During the Roman period, Byllis became a colony and was known as Colonia Iulia Augusta. The city later gained religious importance during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 5th century AD, with the construction of several large Palaeo-Christian basilicas adorned with lavish mosaics. However, in 586 AD, Byllis was sacked by foreign invaders and subsequently abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the remaining foundations of the city walls, the partially restored theater, and the ruins of the basilicas. The park also features a museum that houses artifacts discovered at the site, providing additional context to the city's rich history and cultural heritage.
