Discover more about Phoenice Archaeological Park

Phoenice Archaeological Park, located near the village of Finiq in southern Albania, offers a captivating journey into the past. This ancient city, once the capital of the Chaonian tribe, was a significant political and economic center in the region of Epirus. Founded in the 6th century BC, Phoenice thrived as a commercial hub due to its strategic location near the Straits of Corfu and the Pavllë River.Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins that showcase the city's rich history. The massive fortification walls, dating back to the 4th century BC, attest to Phoenice's importance as a defensive stronghold. The Hellenistic theater, one of the park's most iconic monuments, reflects both the Greek and Roman periods of the city. Remnants of Roman houses, temples, and baths offer glimpses into daily life in ancient Phoenice. The park also features Byzantine-era religious buildings, including the remains of a large basilica, reflecting the city's transformation in later centuries. In a surprising twist, the site also bears traces of its use as a military base during Albania's communist era, with concrete bunkers dotting the landscape. These bunkers, now mingled with ancient structures, create a unique juxtaposition of different historical periods. The park's hilltop location offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Ionian Sea, enhancing the visitor experience.
