Mesi Bridge: A Testament to Ottoman Engineering

Nestled in the serene village of Mes, approximately 5 kilometers northeast of Shkodër, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit, meaning "the bridge in the middle") is a captivating testament to 18th-century Ottoman engineering. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, the bridge spans the Kir River and was strategically built to connect Shkodër with Drisht and other northern settlements, facilitating trade and military movements.The bridge's construction was executed in two phases. The initial phase included the central arch and an adjacent arch, while the subsequent phase added the remaining 11 arches, resulting in a total length of 108 meters, a width of 3.4 meters and a height of 12.5 meters. It is one of the longest Ottoman bridges in the region, showcasing traditional Ottoman architectural elements with its round, smooth stones and stone plates.Today, the Mesi Bridge stands as a cherished cultural monument and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors are drawn to its picturesque setting, the intriguing architecture, and the tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding landscape offers opportunities for photography, nature walks, and exploration. Though floods have caused some damage over time, the bridge remains a symbol of resilience and a vital link to Albania's rich history. During the warmer months, many locals and tourists enjoy bicycle tours around the area and bathe in the refreshing waters of the Kir River.
