St. Mary's Monastery: A Byzantine Jewel on Zvërnec Island

St. Mary's Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Dormition of Theotokos Mary, is a renowned Byzantine monastery situated on Zvërnec Island in the Narta Lagoon, near Vlorë. This secluded island, measuring only 430m by 300m, is covered with pine trees and rocky shores, creating a serene and picturesque setting. The monastery is believed to have been constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries, although some scholars suggest origins as early as the 10th or 11th century. It stands as a testament to Albania's rich Orthodox Christian heritage. The monastery's architecture showcases the Byzantine style, featuring a "free cross" plan and a central dome. The facade includes arches supported by six columns, blending Roman and Byzantine influences. According to researcher Aleksandër Meksi, the structure has two distinct construction phases: the old and new parts. The older section comprises the nave and narthex, while newer additions, including the exonarthex and bell tower, reflect Roman influences. Throughout its history, the monastery served as a haven for monks seeking solitude and spiritual connection. It faced periods of neglect, particularly during the communist era when religious institutions were suppressed; it was even repurposed as a detention center for political prisoners. Restoration efforts began in 1972 to preserve the structural integrity of the church, with additional conservation work in 2001 to maintain its architectural and artistic elements. Inside, visitors can admire intricate frescoes and a wooden iconostasis, showcasing the artistic heritage of the region. The monastery complex also features a smaller chapel, monks' dormitories, a workshop, a warehouse, and a small cemetery where Marigo Posio, who embroidered the first Albanian flag, is buried. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved monastery, wander through the peaceful gardens, and appreciate the tranquil island setting. The island is accessible via a 270-meter wooden footbridge that connects it to the mainland, offering beautiful views of the lagoon and surrounding pine forests.
