Discover more about Venetian Tower of Durrës

The Venetian Tower stands as a remarkable historical defensive structure in Durrës, Albania. As an integral part of the Byzantine Fortress of Durrës, it was once considered among the most formidable defense structures on the Adriatic Sea's western coast. The fortress's origins trace back to Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I (491–518), a native of Durrës. Constructed atop the remains of a Byzantine tower around the 15th century during Venetian rule (1392-1501), the tower was fortified with cannons to protect the city from maritime attacks, serving as a crucial observation point. The tower itself has a diameter of 16 meters and a height of 9 meters, equipped with turrets and alcoves. Its thick walls, measuring 3.70 meters, allowed for a cylindrical staircase to the roof and ammunition depots. In 2022-2023, the Venetian Tower underwent renovation, transforming into Albania's first Heritage Interpretation Center. Visitors can now explore historical events through state-of-the-art digital and multimedia tools, including VR headsets, audio guides, and dome multimedia projections. This blends entertainment with an in-depth look at the city's ancient history.
