Discover more about The Castle of Porto Palermo

The Castle of Porto Palermo, cradled in the serene bay of Porto Palermo, stands as a testament to Albania's rich and often turbulent past. Located on a small peninsula between Himarë and Qeparo, approximately 45 kilometers from Saranda, this fortress offers visitors a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Also known as Ali Pasha Tepelena Fortress, its origins are debated, with some claiming construction by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in 1804, while others suggest it was built earlier by the Venetians. Regardless, the castle's strategic position made it a vital stronghold, offering control over the Ionian coastline. Legend says Ali Pasha built it for his wife, Vasiliqi, although this is unconfirmed. An inscription at the entrance once warned intruders of a 'black viper' guarding the walls. The castle's well-preserved triangular shape is a highlight, and visitors can explore its narrow corridors, climb the battlements, and soak in panoramic views. The site also features a former submarine base nearby, built in 1969 during the Cold War, though it is now abandoned and closed to the public. The castle has also served as a prison during and after WWII. Today, Porto Palermo Castle is a gem of military architecture and a must-visit destination on the Albanian Riviera. The bay's clear turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the surrounding area offers a peaceful escape from crowded tourist spots.
