Discover more about Porto Palermo

Porto Palermo Castle, also known as Ali Pasha Castle, is a historical fortress located on the Albanian Riviera. The castle is situated in the bay of Porto Palermo, a few kilometers south of Himarë. The castle was constructed in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena, a local ruler known for his strong influence in the region. Strategically positioned, the shores of Porto Palermo have been utilized for defensive purposes from antiquity through World War II. The well-preserved castle that stands today was erected in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Contrary to some claims, it's unlikely that a Venetian or Ottoman fortification existed there before. An inscription above the entrance suggests the castle was built in 1804 by French engineers for Ali Pasha, who was concerned about the coastal flank of his Pashalik. The castle's architecture features a triangular layout with three bastions, thick stone walls, and an interior courtyard. It served as both a defensive structure and a residence for Ali Pasha. Declared a cultural monument in 1948, today Porto Palermo Castle serves as a museum and historical landmark. Visitors can explore the castle's unique architecture, including the hexagonal central chamber with a domed ceiling, and enjoy panoramic views of the Ionian Sea.
