The Xhamia e Pazarit, or Bazaar Mosque, is a captivating landmark nestled in the historic city of Gjirokastër. This mosque represents a significant piece of Islamic heritage in the region and is renowned for its stunning architectural features and tranquil ambiance. The mosque, also known as the Memi Bey Mosque, was built in 1757 during the Ottoman period. It is located in the Old Bazaar neighborhood. Originally, fifteen mosques were built in the city during the Ottoman era; thirteen survived until the communist period. In 1973, the mosque was elevated to Cultural Monument status by the Albanian government, sparing it from destruction by the totalitarian communist regime. The remaining twelve mosques were demolished. Because of a religion ban in Albania, the mosque was used as a training hall for circus acrobats who made use of the high domed ceilings to hang their trapezes. After the fall of the regime, the mosque was reopened for worship in 1991. In 2018, it was restored and took on a very beautiful appearance. As you approach the mosque, the peaceful surroundings and the building itself are quite striking. The mosque reflects the traditional Ottoman style, characterized by its elegant arches and intricate tile work, which invites visitors to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into its construction. The interior has a square plan with a dome. The minaret has a polygonal body. Nearby is a two-story octagonal building that was built in 1727, which was originally used as a Bektashi cemevi but is now a madrasah. Gjirokastër itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a visit to Xhamia e Pazarit complements the exploration of the city's rich history and culture. Many tourists enjoy wandering through the nearby bazaars and streets, where they can find traditional crafts and local delicacies.
