The Gjirokastër Obelisk, also known as "Mëmëdheu ABC" (Motherland ABC), is a striking monument dedicated to the Albanian language and the pursuit of education during Ottoman rule. Erected near the site of Gjirokastër's first school (established in 1908), it commemorates the struggle to learn and use Albanian when it was prohibited in schools.The obelisk, created by Muntaz Dhrami, Ksenofon Kostaqi, and Stefan Papamihali, is constructed from 124 blocks of hewn stone sourced from Lekdush Progonat, known for its resistance to natural elements. Standing at 7 meters high, the monument offers breathtaking views of Gjirokastër, including the old town districts of Varosh, Palorto, and Dunavat.Visiting the obelisk provides a chance to reflect on Albania's history and cultural identity while enjoying the panoramic vistas.
