Built by Beqir Zeko, a local administrator under Ali Pasha's government, it exemplifies the authentic southern Albanian Tosk-style residential housing of wealthy Albanians during the early 19th century. The house is described as one of the grandest examples of Gjirokastër architecture in the Ottoman style.Fortified tower houses, known as kullë in Albanian, were typically owned by wealthy individuals such as government officials or merchants. The Zekate House features a basic design with a secure stone ground floor and a wooden gallery above, which housed the most important rooms for an extended family. Embrasures in the walls provided defense against attackers. The house has two towers and a large double-arched facade.Inside, the Zekate House boasts lavish decorations that reflect the wealth and status of its former occupants. Visitors can explore reception halls, living quarters and storage areas furnished with period pieces. The principal room showcases frescoed walls, a carved ceiling, and an ornate fireplace. A wooden balcony at the top of the staircase overlooks the town, offering panoramic views.After enjoying protected monument status during the Communist era, the Zekate House fell into disrepair during the post-Communist transition. However, it has since been restored by the Gjirokastra Conservation and Development Organization (GCDO). Today, the Zekate House is open to the public as a museum, providing insight into Albania's cultural heritage and architectural legacy.
