Perched atop a hill overlooking Gjirokastra, the Castle of Gjirokastra is a monumental fortress with a rich and complex history. Believed to have been inhabited since the 4th-5th century, the first castle walls were constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle's strategic importance grew after the fall of Hadrianopolis, leading local families to seek refuge and protection within its walls. Throughout the centuries, the castle has served various roles. The Ottoman Empire occupied it in 1419, and Ali Pasha of Tepelena significantly reconstructed and expanded it in the 19th century, adding the iconic clock tower. During King Zog's reign in 1932, the castle prison was expanded, and it continued to house political prisoners during the communist regime until 1968. Today, Gjirokastra Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, which include a military museum with artillery from WWI and WWII, the former prison, and a pavilion dedicated to Gjirokastra's history. The castle also features five towers, two teke, a cistern, and the stage for the National Folk Festival. The castle offers panoramic views of Gjirokastra, the Drino Valley, and the surrounding mountains.
