Getting There

Walking

The Durrës Amphitheatre is centrally located, a short walk from the main square and the Durrës promenade. From the city center, walk north on Rruga Anastas Durrsaku. The amphitheater will be visible on your left, surrounded by modern buildings. Entrance fee is 300 Lek.
Public Transport

If arriving by bus from Tirana, the Durrës Bus Station is approximately a 15-20 minute walk to the amphitheater. Exit the station and walk towards the city center, following signs to the amphitheater or using a map. A local taxi from the bus station to the amphitheater will cost approximately 300-500 Lek. Bus fare from Tirana is around 200-300 Lek.

The Durrës Amphitheatre stands as a remarkable testament to Albania's rich history and Roman heritage. Constructed in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this grand structure was designed to host gladiatorial games and public spectacles, accommodating between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators. As the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans, it served as a cultural and social focal point for the ancient city of Dyrrachium, now Durrës.The amphitheater's architecture reflects Roman engineering. The structure includes underground tunnels, vaulted seating, and a drainage system. In the 4th century AD, during the Byzantine period, a Christian chapel was constructed within the amphitheater, adorned with mosaics. These mosaics reflect the transition towards Christianity.Over the centuries, the amphitheater was gradually abandoned and buried under layers of earth. It was rediscovered in 1966 during construction work. Today, visitors can explore the excavated ruins, including the arena, tunnels, and the remains of the Byzantine chapel. The site provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur of Roman architecture and the cultural history of Albania. The Durrës Amphitheatre is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
