    Walking

    From the center of Himarë, follow the main road (SH8) north for approximately 2.5 kilometers. The walk is uphill and steep, taking around 45 minutes to an hour. Consider starting in the late afternoon to avoid the heat. Upon reaching the base of the castle hill, follow the signs to the entrance.

    Taxis are readily available in Himarë. A taxi ride to Himara Castle from the town center takes about 10 minutes. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey.     Himara Castle, also known as Kastro e Himarës, is a captivating historical site overlooking the town of Himarë. The castle's origins trace back to ancient times, with evidence suggesting settlement by the Greek tribe of the Chaonians as far back as the 8th century BC. The site was later fortified, and Roman author Pliny the Elder mentioned it in the 1st century AD.Throughout its history, Himara Castle has served as a strategic stronghold, witnessing the rise and fall of various empires. The Byzantines, including Emperor Justinian, further strengthened the fortress. During the Middle Ages, it became an Episcopal center in the 8th century. The castle was inhabited until the 16th century when residents began moving towards the coast near the Port of Himara.Today, visitors can explore the castle's ruins, including the remnants of stone houses and churches. Among the notable churches are the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, dating back to the 11th century, the Church of All Saints, and the Church of Saint Mary Kasopitra. The castle's elevated position, approximately 240 meters above sea level, provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, Livadhi Beach, and the surrounding canyons and mountains.
