Rozafa Castle: A Timeless Sentinel of Shkodër

Perched on a commanding rocky hill, Rozafa Castle is a powerful symbol of Shkodër's rich history and enduring spirit. The castle's origins trace back to the Illyrian era, with evidence of fortifications dating to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Over the centuries, it has been a strategic stronghold for Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its walls and structures.The castle is renowned for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice where a woman was walled into the fortress to prevent its collapse. According to the legend, Rozafa, the wife of one of three brothers who were trying to build the castle, agreed to be sacrificed on the condition that her right breast, eye, hand, and foot be left exposed so she could continue to nurse her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance commemorates this poignant story.Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore remnants of different eras, including the Church of St. Stephen, which was transformed into the Mosque of Sultan Fatih during the Ottoman period. The castle also houses a museum with artifacts detailing its history and the broader region.
