Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or Kalaja e Tiranës, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical landmark in the center of Tirana. Its history stretches back before 1300, with origins in the Byzantine era. The castle's location was once the intersection of the main east-west and north-south roads, forming the heart of Tirana. While not a traditional castle in the imposing sense, the site offers a glimpse into the city's past. Today, visitors can see a 6-meter high Ottoman-era wall, covered in vines, which is one of the most visible remnants. The recently uncovered wall foundations have been incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street. The castle precinct has evolved into a vibrant hub. Inside the walls, you'll find restaurants, hotels, cultural institutions, and a traditional bazaar. The bazaar offers traditional handicrafts and cuisine, evoking the atmosphere of the Byzantine era. The Toptani Shopping Center, considered one of Tirana's most modern, is also nearby. The castle has undergone many changes throughout history. Originally constructed in the 11th century as part of the Byzantine Empire's defensive network, it was later adapted and strengthened by the Ottomans. In 1798, the Toptani family took control, leading to a period of conflict. Although the castle was damaged, the Toptani family rebuilt it, later transforming it into a tourist attraction.Tirana Castle was declared a Monument of Culture of the first category in 1973, and the new tracks of walls were declared a cultural monument in 2008.
