Discover more about Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum (Skanderbeg)

The Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum, also known as the Skanderbeg Museum, is located inside the historic Krujë Castle, a symbol of Albanian resistance. The museum is dedicated to Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, Albania's national hero, who defended the country against the Ottoman Empire for over two decades in the 15th century. The museum, inaugurated on November 1, 1982, was designed to resemble a medieval Albanian tower, blending with the castle's architecture. Its design was based on the concept of Aleks Buda and brought to life by architects Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits showcasing artifacts from the ancient Illyrians, historical writings, drawings, maps, and icons. The museum complex is divided into several spaces that chronologically present Albanian history, with a focus on Skanderbeg's life and battles. The exhibits include the Antiquity and Early Medieval Pavilion, the Albanian Principalities Pavilion, the Ottoman Occupation and Resistance Pavilion, and more. Visitors can see original objects, documents, bibliographies, and reproductions that narrate the history of the Albanian people in the 15th century. The museum also features frescoes inspired by Byzantine art, depicting Skanderbeg's return to Krujë and the unification of the Albanian principalities. The Krujë Castle itself is a historic citadel that withstood three Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466, and 1467, before finally falling in 1476.
