This ancient castle dates back to the Byzantine era, with foundations from the 6th to 7th centuries AD. Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, it is one of three Byzantine castles in Corfu that survive to this day.Strategically positioned, the castle secured the narrow sea passage between Corfu and the Albanian coast. Throughout its history, it has been a site of conquest and defense, with control passing through Norman, Angevin, and Venetian hands. The Venetians destroyed the castle in 1386 after the Genoese refused to surrender it. The castle was rebuilt but suffered devastation again at the hands of the Turks.Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the fortress, including parts of the walls, towers, bastions, and the restored main gate. The castle grounds offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and sea. Exploring the castle provides a glimpse into Corfu's rich history and strategic importance throughout the centuries.
