Overview

Mon Repos Palace, located on the island of Corfu, is a captivating historical landmark with stunning natural surroundings. Built in 1826 by British Commissioner Frederic Adams for his Corfiot wife, Nina Palatianou, the palace exemplifies neoclassical architecture and offers a glimpse into Corfu's past.Originally a summer residence for British governors, Mon Repos was gifted to King George I of Greece in 1864, becoming a royal summer retreat. The name 'Mon Repos,' French for 'My Rest,' reflects its tranquil atmosphere. Notably, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born here in 1921.During the 20th century, the palace faced periods of upheaval, including use as the residence of the Italian governor during the Second World War. Ownership disputes followed, but today, Mon Repos is under the Municipality of Corfu and houses the Museum of Palaiopolis. The surrounding estate is just as compelling, featuring extensive gardens with exotic plants and archaeological remains of the ancient city of Corfu. Visitors can explore the ruins of temples dedicated to Hera, Artemis, and Apollo, as well as a Roman bath and other ancient structures. The Mon Repos estate offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-see destination in Corfu.Currently (June 2025), the museum is temporarily closed for renovations until May 29th, 2025, but the estate remains open to the public.
