Lezha, nestled in northwestern Albania, is a city steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. Founded as Lissos by Dionysius I of Syracuse around 385 BC, it served as a strategic trading post on the Adriatic. The city later became a vital center of the Illyrian Kingdom. Lezha is most famous as the site of the League of Lezhë in 1444, where Albanian princes, led by Skanderbeg, united to fight against the Ottoman Empire. This marked the beginning of a 25-year struggle for independence. After Skanderbeg's death in 1468, he was buried in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Lezha. When the Turks conquered Lezha, they destroyed Skanderbeg's grave and turned the church into a mosque. Today, the Skanderbeg Memorial stands in his honor. Visitors can explore the ruins of Lezha Castle, which showcases Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman architectural influences. The city also offers access to the Adriatic coast with beaches like Shëngjin, and natural wonders like the Kune-Vain Lagoon.
