Walking

From the center of Lezhë, head north on Rruga Skënderbeu, then turn left onto Rruga Varosh. Follow Rruga Varosh, and you will see Lezhë Castle on your right. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes and involves a steep incline. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Public Transport

From the main bus station in Lezhë, you can walk to Lezhë Castle in about 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, take a local taxi from the bus station to the castle for approximately 300-500 Albanian Lek. The castle is well-signposted.

From the SH1 road, follow the signs directing you to Lezhë Castle. The castle is located at QMM2+F2X, Rruga Varosh, Lezhë 4501, Albania. Free parking is available near the castle entrance.

Overview

Lezhë Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Lezhës, is a prominent historical landmark that dominates the city of Lezhë in northern Albania. Situated on a hill about 186 meters above sea level, the castle's location was originally the acropolis of the ancient Illyrian city of Lissos.The castle has a rich history, with architectural elements from the Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. It was reconstructed by the Venetians in 1440 and again by the Ottomans in 1522. In 1444, Lezhë Castle was the location where Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania, united Albanian princes in the League of Lezhë to fight against the Ottoman Empire. Within the castle walls, visitors can explore the ruins of Ottoman buildings, a mosque, a Roman arch in the southeastern tower, and an Illyrian tower on the southern wall.Today, Lezhë Castle is a cultural monument offering stunning views of the Lezha fields and the Adriatic Sea. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, discover its historical significance, and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
