Mesi Bridge: A Testament to Ottoman Engineering

Nestled in the serene village of Mes, near Shkodër, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit) is a captivating testament to 18th-century Ottoman engineering. Spanning the Kir River, this historic stone bridge was constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, to connect Shkodër with Drisht and other northern settlements. The bridge stretches 108 meters in length, with a width of 3.4 meters and a height of 12.5 meters. It features 13 stone arches, each varying slightly in size, adding to its unique character. The central arch, the largest, spans approximately 21.5 meters. Constructed from locally sourced stone, the bridge showcases traditional Ottoman architectural elements, with round, smooth stones and stone plates contributing to its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.Over the centuries, the Mesi Bridge has served as a vital crossing point, facilitating trade, communication, and military movements. Today, it stands as a Cultural Monument of the First Category in Albania, attracting tourists from around the world. Visitors can admire the bridge's architecture, explore the surrounding natural landscape, and even take a refreshing dip in the Kir River during the warmer months. The bridge has been damaged over time by devastating floods, which have resulted in floodwaters cutting away at the arches on the right side, causing cracking.
