Discover more about Durrës Amphitheatre

The Durrës Amphitheatre, located in the heart of Durrës, Albania, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and Roman heritage. Built in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this impressive structure is the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans. In its prime, it could accommodate between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators, who gathered to witness gladiatorial combats, wild animal fights, and public events. The amphitheater's architecture showcases Roman engineering prowess, featuring underground tunnels, vaulted seating, and an intricate drainage system. The arena itself measured approximately 60 by 40 meters. Over the centuries, the amphitheater underwent several transformations. In the 4th century AD, after the earthquake of 345/346 AD damaged the monument, a Byzantine chapel adorned with stunning mosaics was constructed within the structure, reflecting the shift towards Christianity. A medieval chapel was added in the 13th century. The structure was eventually covered over in the 16th century after the Ottoman occupation. Rediscovered in 1966 during urban construction work, the Durrës Amphitheatre has since become a significant tourist attraction. Today, visitors can explore the excavated sections of the amphitheater, marvel at the well-preserved mosaics, and imagine the grandeur of ancient Roman spectacles. The site offers a unique blend of historical exploration and cultural immersion, providing a glimpse into Albania's ancient past. Although only about a third of the site has been excavated, the visible remains offer a compelling glimpse into the past. The Albanian government is seeking to have the amphitheater listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
