Discover more about Guri i Qytetit

Guri i Qytetit, also known as the Stone of the City, is a prominent natural landmark in Përmet, Albania. Rising 25 meters above the city and 250 meters above sea level, this unique geological formation is considered a symbol of the city's identity. Geologists believe the limestone olistolith was separated from Dhëmbel Mountain after an earthquake. According to local legend, the chieftain of the Premti region, who gave the city its name, built a castle atop Guri i Qytetit. In the late 14th century, as the Ottoman army advanced, Diestra, the chieftain's daughter, is said to have leapt from the rock with her child to avoid capture. Today, only the ruins of the ancient control point remain, dating back to the 4th-6th centuries AD. Archaeological discoveries suggest the site was used as a signaling point for a military garrison controlling the Vjosa valley. Visitors can ascend the 160 steps to the summit for breathtaking views of the Vjosa River valley and the surrounding hills. The area surrounding the rock is rich in flora and fauna, offering opportunities for nature walks and birdwatching. Guri i Qytetit is a destination for those seeking adventure and relaxation.
