Getting there

Walking

From the center of Sarandë, begin walking towards Rruga Skenderbeu. Follow the road uphill; it will lead you towards the castle. The walk is approximately 3 kilometers and takes around 40 minutes. Be prepared for a steep incline as you approach the castle.

Public Transport

From Sarandë, take a minibus (furgon) heading towards Konispol. The minibus station is near the main square. The fare is approximately 100 Albanian Lek. Inform the driver you wish to get off at Kalaja e Lëkurësit. The journey is about 15 minutes, followed by a short uphill walk to the entrance.

A taxi or ride-share from the center of Sarandë to Kalaja e Lëkurësit typically costs between 500-800 Lek, depending on the company, time of day, and demand. The journey takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

Perched on a strategic hill overlooking Sarandë, Kalaja e Lëkurësit (Lëkurësit Castle) is a historic castle offering visitors a blend of history and stunning views. Constructed in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, the castle was built to defend against the Venetians and control the harbor of Sarandë and the road to Butrint.The castle's location provides commanding views of Sarandë, the Ionian Sea, and the islands of Ksamil. The structure itself is almost square, with two round towers at opposite corners. The best-preserved sections are the southern and eastern sides. Exploring the castle grounds offers a glimpse into Albania's past, with remnants of ancient structures and ruins telling tales of a bygone era.Today, Kalaja e Lëkurësit is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the historic site and enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine at the Restorant Kalaja e Lekuresit, located within the castle walls. The restaurant features an outdoor terrace, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the sunset and occasional traditional folk music and dance performances.
