The Cold War Tunnel: A Glimpse into Albania's Communist Past
Explore Gjirokastër's Cold War Tunnel: An underground glimpse into Albania's communist past and Enver Hoxha's paranoia.
The Cold War Tunnel in Gjirokastër, also known as the Cold War Museum, is an underground bunker constructed during Albania's communist regime (1944-1990). Built in secret in the early 1970s, the tunnel served as an emergency shelter for government officials in case of a foreign invasion or nuclear attack. The paranoid dictator, Enver Hoxha, feared attacks, especially after Albania broke ties with the Soviet Union in the early 1960s. The tunnel is 800 meters long and contains 59 rooms. It was designed to accommodate various functions, including rooms for government ministries, local government, interrogators, party elites, sleeping quarters, power generation, and water storage. Although much of the original furniture was looted in 1990, some pieces remain, offering a genuine glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore the de-contamination room, the generator room (with a rusting Czechoslovakia-made generator), and the air filtration room, gaining insight into the regime's preparations for a potential nuclear attack. The main entrance is near the Municipality building on Sheshi Çerçiz Topulli. Tours take around 20 minutes and provide an atmospheric, albeit less informative, experience.
