Theotoky Estate: A Corfiot Winemaking Legacy

Theotoky Estate, located in the Ropa Valley near Giannades, is one of Corfu's oldest and most esteemed wineries. The 300-acre estate has been owned by the Theotoky family for generations, with a history dating back to land purchases in the Ropa Valley in the late 1700s. The family has deep roots in Greek history, with several members having been prominent politicians. The estate is known for its organic wines, extra virgin olive oil, and olives, which are exported across Europe. Georges Theotoky and his wife Claudia revitalized the winery in the 1960s, modernizing production while preserving traditional winemaking practices. The estate cultivates both red and white grape varietals. The white wine is made with Robolla and Kakotrygis grapes, while the red is made with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Visitors can take a tour of the winery facilities and cellars to learn about the winemaking process. Wine tastings are offered, allowing guests to sample the estate's wines and olive oil. The estate also features a library with rare antique books and archives, as well as a wine museum showcasing the evolution of winemaking techniques. The Ropa Valley, in which the estate is located, was once a lake that was drained, and is now a wetlands habitat, home to diverse wildlife.
