Bachelors' Mosque: A Testament to Ottoman Craftsmanship in Berat

Nestled in the heart of Berat's lower Mangalem neighborhood, the Bachelors' Mosque stands as a testament to the city's rich Ottoman heritage and the unique role of its artisan community. Constructed in 1827-1828, this mosque, also known as the Sylejman Pasha Mosque, was commissioned for the city's young, unmarried craftsmen, who often worked as night guards at the city market. The mosque's architecture is characterized by its two-story structure, a low minaret, and arcades gracing three sides, all harmoniously blending with the surrounding traditional houses. Inside, visitors can admire the vibrant frescoes dating back to 1927–1928, showcasing floral motifs and geometric formations that exemplify the artistic prowess of the era.
