    From the Elbasan city center, the castle is easily accessible on foot. Head northeast, following signs for 'Kalaja e Elbasanit'. The walk is approximately 10-15 minutes, passing local shops and cafes. The castle entrance is located near the Clock Tower.

  • Public Transport

    If arriving by bus at the Elbasan Bus Station, exit and walk northeast on Rruga e Shtyllave. Continue onto Rruga 1 Maji, then turn left. Follow the signs to Elbasan Castle, approximately a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, a local taxi from the bus station to the castle costs around 300-500 ALL.

    If driving, take the SH3 highway towards Elbasan. Once in the city center, follow signs to Elbasan Castle. Limited parking is available near the castle. Parking fees may apply. A parking spot at 45 Rruga Ismail Qemali, close to the old town, costs 400 lek per day.

Elbasan Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating historical site in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century AD as a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, it served as a military fortification along the Via Egnatia. In the 15th century, the castle was rebuilt by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, transforming it into a garrison town. The Ottomans expanded the fortress, adding 26 equidistant towers and 9-meter high walls. Enclosing over two thousand houses, the castle became a thriving manufacturing center, boasting over 900 shops that produced leather, silk, and precious metals. Today, the Castle Neighborhood is a vibrant area where the past and present intertwine. Visitors can explore the remains of Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, an early 19th-century attraction, as well as various monuments such as the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church of St. Mary's Assumption, the King's Mosque, and the Clock Tower.
