Elbasan Castle: A Journey Through Time

Elbasan Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating historical site in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century AD as a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, it served as a military fortification along the Via Egnatia.In the 15th century, the castle was rebuilt by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, transforming it into a garrison town. The Ottomans expanded the fortress, adding 26 equidistant towers and 9-meter high walls. Enclosing over two thousand houses, the castle became a thriving manufacturing center, boasting over 900 shops that produced leather, silk, and precious metals.Today, the Castle Neighborhood is a vibrant area where the past and present intertwine. Visitors can explore the remains of Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, an early 19th-century attraction, as well as various monuments such as the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church of St. Mary's Assumption, the King's Mosque, and the Clock Tower.
