Discover more about Kulla e Sahatit

The Kulla e Sahatit, also known as the Clock Tower, is one of Tirana's most recognizable landmarks. Constructed in 1822 by Et'hem Bey, who also completed the adjacent Et'hem Bey Mosque, the tower reflects Ottoman-era architecture and civic pride. Originally, the clock mechanism was imported from Venice, and a bell from Germany was added in the 19th century. Standing at 35 meters (115 feet), the tower was once the tallest structure in Tirana. It features a square stone base built with local limestone and a cylindrical tower topped with a dome-shaped roof and a viewing balcony. The clock faces are displayed on all four sides. A spiral staircase with 90 narrow steps leads to the top, offering panoramic views of Skanderbeg Square, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the National Museum, and Mount Dajti. Over the years, the tower has undergone several changes. In 1928, a German-made clock replaced the original one, and the tower was expanded. Damaged during World War II, it was later rebuilt, and in 1970, a modern clock system was installed. Today, the Kulla e Sahatit stands as a testament to Tirana's resilience and a reminder of its rich history, drawing both locals and tourists.
