Located in the heart of Tirana on Skanderbeg Square, the National Historical Museum (Muzeu Historik Kombëtar) stands as Albania's most prominent museum, chronicling the country's vast history. Opened in 1981, the museum's imposing facade features a large mosaic titled 'The Albanians,' depicting key figures and moments in Albanian history. Inside, the museum spans 27,000 square meters, with 18,000 dedicated to exhibitions. The collection comprises around 4,750 artifacts, offering insights into Albania's cultural evolution from the Paleolithic era through the Middle Ages, the Ottoman period, the struggle for independence, the Second World War, the communist regime, and the transition to democracy. The museum is organized into eight pavilions, each focusing on a specific period or theme: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Independence, Iconography, the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, Communist Terror, and Mother Teresa. These pavilions showcase a range of artifacts, including archaeological finds, religious icons, historical documents, and personal belongings of significant figures. Note that The National Historical Museum is undergoing a major renovation until 2028.
