The square is dominated by the Skanderbeg Monument, an equestrian statue honoring the 15th-century nobleman who resisted the Ottomans. Many consider him Albania's King Arthur or William Tell. Encompassing approximately 40,000 square meters, the plaza connects various historical landmarks and modern establishments. Significant buildings surrounding the square include the National History Museum, with its striking mosaic facade , the Et'hem Bey Mosque, showcasing intricate frescoes , and the Palace of Culture. The square was re-opened to the public in June 2017 as a pedestrian zone , and it received the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2018.
