Getting there

Car

From Berat, take the SH72 road towards the Tomorr Mountain area, approximately 30 kilometers away. Follow signs for Tomorr Mountain, passing through the villages of Banjë and Tërpan. Continue to the Tomorr National Park entrance, where a small entrance fee (around 100 ALL) may be required. Proceed towards the Tomorr Mountain trailhead, where parking is available. Note that a 4x4 vehicle is advised for the final ascent to the southern summit.

Public Transport

Take a bus from Tirana to Berat (400-600 ALL). From Berat, take a local minibus or taxi to the Tomorr Mountain area (approx. 200 ALL by Minibus). After arriving at the Tomorr National Park entrance, hike or arrange for a local guide to reach Maja e Tomorrit. Be prepared with proper gear and water for the challenging hike.

Overview

Maja e Tomorrit, reaching a height of 2,416 meters (7,927 ft), is the most prominent and culturally significant mountain in Albania. Located east of Berat and Poliçan, it dominates the landscape with its solitary presence. The mountain is central to Albanian folklore and is considered sacred by locals, with legends describing Baba Tomorr, a mythical giant, embodying the mountain.The mountain's southern summit is accessible by car and is the site of the mausoleum of Abbas Ali, attracting thousands of Bektashi pilgrims annually between August 20 and 25. Christians also climb the mountain on Assumption Day (August 15) to honor the Virgin Mary. The Tomorr Mountain National Park, established in 1956, protects the mountain's diverse flora and fauna, including endangered species like bears and wolves.Hiking trails cater to both novice and experienced hikers, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The northern summit, Çuka e Partizanit, is more remote and challenging to access. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of central and southern Albania, and on clear days, even glimpse the Italian coast.
