Discover more about Kamenica Tumulus

The Kamenica Tumulus, located in Kamenicë, Korçë County, is one of Albania's most significant archaeological sites, offering a glimpse into the region's prehistoric past. This ancient burial ground, the largest of its kind in Albania, dates back to the Bronze Age (13th century BC) and was in use until the Iron Age (7th century BC). Over 400 graves have been discovered, containing approximately 440 skeletons and over 3,500 archaeological objects. The tumulus is located in the side of the Kamenica hills, in the southern side of the Korçë Plain, roughly 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Korçë. The central grave, dating back to the 13th century BC, is unique due to its two large concentric circles. Over time, the tumulus expanded, with 40 graves added during the Late Bronze Age (1200-1050 BC) and 200 more in the Early Iron Age (1050–750 BC). By the 7th century BC, the tumulus had grown into an elliptical shape, measuring 70 m x 50 m. Adjacent to the tumulus is a museum showcasing the history of the excavation and displaying artifacts discovered at the site. Of particular interest is the illustration of a 6th-century BC cranial surgery, demonstrating the advanced medical knowledge of the community. The museum also features replica graves with original remains. The site has been the location of cultural activities, including classical music concerts, and Albania's National Cultural Heritage Day is celebrated here every September 29th. Visitors can explore the grassy mound and wander along pathways to observe the ongoing archaeological efforts. The site provides a tangible connection to the past, revealing cultural resilience and intertwining with the history of the Balkan populations.
