Discover more about Berat Castle

Berat Castle, also known as Kalaja e Beratit, the Citadel of Berat, or simply the “castle quarter” is one of the oldest standing fortifications in Europe, built in the 4th century BC. Situated on a 214-meter high hill, it dominates the skyline above the city of Berat and offers stunning views of the Osum River, the old town, and the nearby Tomorri Mountain National Park. Shaped over centuries by Byzantine and Ottoman influences, the castle's high stone walls have witnessed decades of war, religious shifts, and cultural diversity. Within its walls lie Byzantine churches, mosques, and traditional Ottoman-era houses, where around 100 families still reside, offering a glimpse into the past. Key sites include the remains of the Red Mosque, dating back to the 15th century, and the Holy Trinity Church, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture. The Onufri Museum, located within the castle, showcases a collection of ecclesiastical art. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, wander through the narrow, winding alleys, and admire the views from the ramparts. The castle stands as a testament to Albania's diverse history and the coexistence of different religious and cultural communities over centuries.
