The Martyrs Memorial, known locally as Maqam Echahid (مقام الشهيد), stands as a powerful symbol of Algeria's struggle for independence. Inaugurated in 1982 on the 20th anniversary of the nation's liberation, the monument commemorates the sacrifices made during the Algerian War.Rising 92 meters (302 feet) high, the memorial's design is both striking and deeply symbolic. It consists of three stylized concrete palm leaves that soar upwards, joining together to shelter an "Eternal Flame." Each palm leaf is punctuated at its base by a statue of a soldier, representing a different stage of Algeria's fight for freedom. The monument was designed by Algerian artist Bachir Yellès and constructed by a Canadian company. The Martyrs Memorial is situated on a hill in the El Madania district, offering panoramic views of Algiers and the Mediterranean Sea.
