Completed in 1956, it replaced the Cathedral of Saint Philip after the latter was reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. Consecrated in 1963, it serves as the cathedral church for the Archdiocese of Algiers and is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark.The cathedral's construction was initiated in 1944 by Bishop Leynaud, embodying modernist architectural principles inspired by the Gospel of John. Architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur, along with engineer René Sarger, designed the structure with a striking central tower as its focal point. The nave spans 52 meters in length and 35 meters in width, creating an impressive visual presence.Inside, the cathedral offers a peaceful atmosphere enhanced by unique features. A small organ, a gift from the parish of Boufarik, greets visitors at the nave entrance, opposite a historic mosaic dating back to 324 CE, which originated from the Roman basilica of Castellum Tingitanum (present-day Chlef). The altar, carved from Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints, adding to the cathedral's sacred aura.
