The Basilica of Notre Dame d'Afrique (Our Lady of Africa) is a Catholic basilica in Algiers, Algeria. Completed in 1872 after 14 years of construction, it was founded by Charles Lavigerie. The basilica is more than just a religious monument; it's a symbol of peace, tolerance, and dialogue between cultures. Designed by Jean-Eugène Fromageau, the basilica showcases a unique Neo-Byzantine style, incorporating Roman, Byzantine, and Moorish influences. This architectural blend reflects the intention to bridge European and African cultures. The basilica's dome, inspired by Byzantine architecture, is a prominent feature, while Moorish influences are evident in the arches, columns, and ornaments. Inside, visitors can admire the 46 stained glass windows installed in the 19th century, which have been restored twice since World War II. The basilica also features ceramics by Mohamed Boumehdi and a fresco behind the choir that evokes the Christian history of North Africa. Located on a 124-meter cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers, the basilica offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The inscription on the apse wall, written in French, Arabic, and Berber, reads: “Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims,” highlighting the basilica's role as a place of prayer and pilgrimage for both Christians and Muslims. Today, Notre Dame d'Afrique regularly hosts cultural activities, including music concerts and exhibitions.
