The Great Mosque of Algiers: A Historic Landmark

Djamaa el Kebir, or the Great Mosque of Algiers, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, under the reign of Yusuf ibn Tashfin, it is considered one of the oldest mosques in Algeria. The mosque's design, featuring naves perpendicular to the qibla wall and a rectangular courtyard bordered by galleries, became a model for religious architecture in the region.Over the centuries, the Great Mosque has undergone several additions and reconstructions. In 1322, the Zayyanid sultan Abu Tashfin I of Tlemcen added the minaret. The mosque suffered severe damage during the French bombardment of Algiers in the 17th century, leading to the subsequent reconstruction of its mihrab and qibla wall. A portico of columns and poly-lobed arches was added during the French colonial period.The prayer hall is divided by pillars and horseshoe arches into eleven naves covered by double-sloping tiled roofs. The mihrab, though reconstructed, features small spiral columns, characteristic of 18th-century Algiers, and stucco relief in the shape of lobed arches. The minbar (pulpit) is now housed in the National Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Arts in Algiers.Located in the historic Casbah district near the harbor, the Great Mosque stands as a reminder of Algiers' past. Visitors can appreciate its unique blend of Almoravid architecture and later additions, reflecting the city's diverse cultural influences.
