Discover more about Musée Bordj Moussa

Musée Bordj Moussa, also known as Fort Musa or Fort Barral, is a historical gem located in the coastal city of Béjaïa, Algeria. Originally built by the Spanish in the 16th century on the ruins of an older palace, it has served various roles throughout its history, including a military fort during the Ottoman period and a prison during French colonization. In 1555, the Ottomans, led by Admiral Salah Rais, seized the fort from the Spanish, renaming it Bordj Moussa. The name honors Moussa, the first of seven local marabouts who sacrificed themselves attempting to breach the fort and end the Spanish occupation. The fort's architecture is a testament to its military past, featuring thick walls (over two meters thick), and a design meant to encircle the enemy. Transformed into a museum in 1989, Musée Bordj Moussa now houses a diverse collection of artifacts. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing prehistoric tools, Roman stelae, ceramics from the Hammadid period, and 19th-century jewelry and pottery. The museum also features paintings, including works by Émile Aubrey, and sculptures, such as Camille Claudel's "Néo-BiD." From the fort's ramparts, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Béjaïa and the Mediterranean Sea.
