The Mers Eddadjadj Archaeological Site, located in Zemmouri El Bahri, is a captivating window into Algeria's layered history. This site reveals remnants of civilizations spanning from prehistoric times through the Berber, Punic, Roman, and Islamic periods. It stands on the coast, approximately 15 km east of Boumerdès. Originally, the area was a Phoenician and later Roman settlement known as Rusubikari. It evolved into the medieval port city of Mersa al Dajaj. Historical texts, including Ibn Khaldoun's 'Kitab El Ibar,' mention the site. Archaeological excavations have uncovered medieval structures, pottery, and Roman coins, attesting to its historical significance. The site is believed to hold the remains of a unique Islamic-era village, stretching across seven hectares. Excavations have revealed ruins of homes with courtyards and wells dating back to the Islamic civilization that flourished in the region between the 10th and 12th centuries. Discoveries include ceramics, iron kitchenware, pottery, and iron door knockers, providing insights into daily life during that era. The city suffered destruction in 1225 during an attack led by Yahia Ben Abi Ghania El Miourki against the Almohads and was buried in sand until its rediscovery in 2006. Today, ongoing archaeological efforts aim to protect and promote the site, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
