Discover more about Porte du Santon

The Porte du Santon, located in the Sidi El Houari district of Oran, is a captivating historical site that offers a glimpse into the city's past. Constructed in 1754 by the Spanish, the gate was strategically positioned at the foot of the Murdjadjo mountain, along the road leading to the Fort of Santa Cruz. Originally named Bab El Hamra, the Porte du Santon consisted of a small fort with two towers. Its primary function was to safeguard the city from potential threats coming from the mountains, as the port of Mers El Kbir was, at that time, the main link between Oran, Tlemcen and the sea. The gate controlled the road that connected the port to Oran through the hills.
