Discover more about Botanical Garden Hamma

The Botanical Garden Hamma, also known as Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, is a sprawling 32-hectare (79-acre) oasis in the heart of Algiers. Founded in 1832 by French colonial authorities, the garden initially served as a test site for acclimatizing plant species from around the world. Over time, it transformed into a stunning landscape, blending scientific exploration with public enjoyment. The garden is divided into several distinct zones, including a French formal garden with terraces and sea views, an experimental section with greenhouses, and an English garden featuring a pond with Japanese carp. Visitors can wander along majestic paths lined with plane trees (planted in 1845), Dracaena draco, giant bamboos and Ficus. The garden is home to over 1,200 plant species from five continents, including date palms and eucalyptus, which were first introduced to Algeria here. Beyond its botanical significance, the garden also features a zoo and the National Museum of Fine Arts. It has served as a backdrop for films, including the 1932 Tarzan movie, adding to its allure. The garden provides a peaceful retreat from the city, attracting nature lovers, families, and those seeking tranquility. After undergoing restoration, the Botanical Garden Hamma reopened in 2009 and now welcomes over 900,000 visitors annually. It also hosts educational programs, with 15,000 schoolchildren participating each year.
