Discover more about Alofaaga Blowholes

The Alofaaga Blowholes, also known as the Taga Blowholes, are a must-see natural attraction on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. Situated near the village of Taga on the southwest coast, these blowholes are a dramatic result of volcanic activity. Millions of years ago, lava flows created underground tunnels that connect the ocean to the surface. Over time, the relentless crashing of waves carved these tunnels into the blowholes we see today. As waves surge into the underwater caves, the water is forced through narrow openings, resulting in spectacular jets of water that can shoot up to 30 meters (approximately 100 feet) into the air. The best time to witness this phenomenon is during high tide when the water displays are most powerful. The surrounding landscape of rugged volcanic rock and lush greenery adds to the visual treat. Local villagers often add to the spectacle by throwing coconuts into the blowholes just before a large wave hits. The force of the water propels the coconuts high into the air, offering a unique and memorable sight. Visitors should exercise caution as the rocks around the blowholes can be slippery and the waves unpredictable. Viewing lines are marked, but it's up to each visitor to decide how close they want to get. The Alofaaga Blowholes also hold cultural significance for the Samoan people. Traditional rituals and ceremonies are sometimes performed at the site, maintaining a spiritual connection between the people and their natural environment.
