Discover more about Fagatele Marine Sanctuary

Fagatele Marine Sanctuary, a jewel in the National Marine Sanctuary System, offers a unique glimpse into a thriving marine ecosystem. Located on the southwestern coast of Tutuila Island in American Samoa, this sanctuary lies within the embrace of a collapsed volcanic crater, creating a naturally protected bay. Established in 1986 as Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary, it was initially created to safeguard the area's recovering coral reefs after a devastating crown-of-thorns starfish outbreak in the late 1970s. In 2012, it expanded to become the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, encompassing six protected areas across the Samoan Archipelago. Fagatele Bay remains a vital component, showcasing the resilience and diversity of life in this remote corner of the Pacific. Today, the sanctuary teems with life. Snorkelers and divers can explore the vibrant coral reefs, home to over 160 species of coral and 271 species of fish. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, reef sharks, and a kaleidoscope of colorful reef fish darting among the coral formations. From June to September, migrating humpback whales may grace the waters, offering a chance to hear the males' enchanting songs. The surrounding landscape adds to the allure, with steep, forested cliffs framing the turquoise waters of the bay. While hiking trails are limited, the short but rewarding Fagatele Bay Trail offers stunning views of the bay and its surroundings. Access to the bay is primarily through the village of Futiga, where visitors must check in with the designated caretaker to access the trail. The sanctuary is a place to connect with nature and appreciate the delicate balance of this protected marine environment.
