Bus
From Pago Pago, take an aiga bus towards the eastern end of Tutuila. Look for buses displaying villages like 'Aua' or 'Lauli'i'. These buses travel along the main road (Route 1). Inform the driver that you wish to get off near the intersection with the road leading to Matu'u. The bus fare is approximately $2.50. From the intersection, walk along the Matu'u road for about 1.5 kilometers. Look for signs indicating the trailhead for Matafao. Aiga buses operate from Monday to Friday until 5:00 PM, with limited service on Saturdays and no service on Sundays.
Taxi
Taxis are available in Pago Pago and can take you directly to the Matu'u area, where the trailhead for Matafao Peak is located. Agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. A taxi ride from Pago Pago to the Matu'u area will likely cost around $15-$25, depending on the exact location and traffic conditions. From there, follow the road for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the trailhead.
Walking
From Aua, head east towards the main road (Route 1). Follow the road until you reach the intersection with the road leading to Matu'u. This should take about 15-20 minutes on foot. Continue walking along the Matu'u road for approximately 1.5 kilometers. You will pass through a few small local neighborhoods. As you approach Matu'u, look for signs that indicate the trailhead for Matafao. The entrance to the trail is typically marked, but if you're unsure, ask a local for directions to the Matafao trail.
