Discover more about Fagatele Marine Sanctuary

Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a jewel in American Samoa, offers a unique glimpse into a thriving coral reef ecosystem. Situated within the eroded crater of a volcano on the island of Tutuila, this marine sanctuary is the smallest, yet perhaps the most vibrant, in the National Marine Sanctuary system. Established in 1986, the sanctuary aims to protect and preserve this exceptional tropical marine habitat. Fagatele Bay is home to an impressive array of marine life. Snorkelers and divers can explore the colorful coral reefs, home to over 168 species of corals and 271 species of fish. Keep an eye out for parrotfish, damselfish, butterflyfish, and other sea creatures like lobsters, crabs, and even sharks. Green sea turtles, eagle rays, and dolphins also find refuge in these protected waters. From June to September, lucky visitors might witness the migration of southern humpback whales from Antarctica. The bay's history is intertwined with both natural events and conservation efforts. In the late 1970s, a crown-of-thorns starfish outbreak devastated much of the coral in the area. The sanctuary's creation was, in part, a response to this disaster, with ongoing monitoring to prevent future outbreaks. The area is also susceptible to cyclones, which can cause significant damage to the reef. Despite these challenges, the sanctuary's resilient ecosystem continues to thrive, offering visitors an unforgettable experience. To make the most of your visit, remember that access to the bay is through the village of Futiga. Check in with the caretaker, Mr. Asuemu Fuimaono, to register and receive information. Respect the local environment by following guidelines for responsible encounters with marine wildlife.
