Discover more about Turtle and Shark

Turtle and Shark (Laumei ma Malie in Samoan) is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place deeply intertwined with Samoan culture and legend. Located on the southern shore of Tutuila, near the village of Vaitogi, this U-shaped cove is where the famous tale of Fonueau and her daughter Salofa unfolded. The legend tells of a time of famine when the pair, facing hardship and neglect, jumped off a cliff into the ocean. In a remarkable transformation, they turned into a turtle and a shark. The villagers believe that the spirits of the turtle and shark can still be summoned through songs and chants, often appearing in the waters near Vaitogi. Today, visitors can experience the magic of this tale at the lookout point. The cove's topography often results in high-energy wave action, creating a dramatic display of nature's power. While swimming is not safe due to blowholes and slippery rocks, the views from the road or viewing platform (currently under repair) are stunning. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, recognizing its significance to the people of American Samoa and the preservation of their cultural and historical identity.
